Beauty
This narrative piece visualises one of the most common racial slurs black men and women face. “You look like burnt toast…burnt potato,” they say.
Inspired by the story of my dearest friend, Eunice Walker, who moved to the UK at age 7. Eunice wrote a spoken word highlighting the verbal exploitation she faced growing up and how that shaped her perception of beauty. At the age of 20 years, she grew to find her true identity and where her beauty lies.
Making use of natural light and neutral colour palettes, I captured my muse from staring at her captor to finding joy in her deliverer where she becomes free, expressive, effortless and proud.
This piece is a reminder that beauty lies in the eyes of the creator. To all my black women, not only are you beautiful but royalty.
Reset & Renew
“Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross…..”
